Pinion tooth count

by Endolf » Sun Feb 05, 2012 10:13 am

Hi
I'm getting my first 450 (a clone, but the question is 450 generic), I don't know how to figure out what size pinion I should use on the motor. I think the important thing is the head speed?, but I don't know what it should be, or what happens if it's under or over. I'm getting a turnigy super brain ESC which logs motor rpm, so I could figure out the head rpm from that if I know the number of teeth on the pinion and main gear, but as I don't know what I'm aiming for I wouldn't know what to change :)

Thanks

Hey, an 11T or 12T would be fine for you. Should be around 2800rpm. I have a 15T on mine.

I run 12T on both SE and Pro. Seems ideal to me. Around 2700 - 2900 headspeed respectively with stock Align motors. Maybe not enough for hard 3D but fine for most flying.

Hi Endo. I think most of the kits come with a pinion of some sort but you could just get a set of three.... 12,13 and 14 from the Bay for less than £3.....Glyn

3500Kv motor is the same as the old Align XL. I ran mine on 13T for around 2600rpm & 2800rpm in idle up, more than enough for a noobie.
Much depends on the motors design so the above is assuming its a XL copy of course.
