Hi

Is the V1 the really cheap kit from HK? If s i built one a month or so back as an exersise in building the cheapest heli possible, it flew ok but the SG 90 servos weren't up to flips :(

As for components

MG90 servos for cyclic
DS480 on the tail
Gyro depends on budget but i'd go for the A-L G1000 minimum
Hobby wing pentium or preferably Platinum ESC

Also get an entire frame screw set, RC Screwz are by far the best but with a bit of patience and research you can source all the screws needed at a fraction of the cost and still high quality SS.

Would seriously look at upgrading the head and tail sooner rather than later as these assys don't come with thrust bearings on the V1 AFAIK.

The electronics mentioned above will give you a decent quality package at a very reasonable price.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Cheers Dan

Hi, I also built one of these some time ago to see how cheap I could build a resonable heli specs are, 3 HXT 900 cyclic servos (£2.40 each), a KD KA400H 3500kv brushless motor (£9.25), Mystery Gyro (from Deal Extreme, £14) I already had a Futaba S9257 for the tail, Spektrum 6100e RX, Plush 40amp ESC , 13t pinion. Of course you could use better components but it fly`s pretty good, and was cheap :D
Couple of old vids of it:

Good luck with the build

Agree with all the above.

MG90 servos are great for cyclic, if budget is a big thing then there is a clone 9257 by Fitec that is surprisingly strong and reliable (off the bay). I saw Benjamininterceptor had a AL-G1000 for sale in "Special Requests", I had one on my SE V2, now it's on my Pro and it's very good.

I'm not sure, but I think the V1 has a 3mm feathering shaft, whereas the newer ones have a 4mm stepped shaft, as mentioned before - worth upgrading the entire head as a unit so you don't end up with spares for both.

The big Fish have a good selection of motors, TP 2415-07T is a nice cheap motor, but if you can get the AX Typhoon 2215H I understand it's a blinder.

HW Pentium or, better still, platinum ESC - 40A are great.

Good luck, when you get it set it set up right it flys like a more expensive heli and is easy to fix in the event of a unscheduled landing.

Should see the state of mine after the SG90 elevator servo gave up mid back flip

Completly goosed

Get the stronger MG servos and save some heartache, to be honest they are hardly more expensive than the plastic geared ones and available in UK.

In total the heli i built cost £90 ish i think so with MG servos about £100 all in. That was with a HK401b gyro that rather annoyingly worked quite well (still go for the A-L G1000 though.

It's been out of stock since well before Xmas, so you may have a wait.
As you are a new pilot, my guess is that you will not be doing flips any time soon.
If you just want to hover and plod around the sky, the cheap gear is fine.
Jim's min cost build is similar to mine.
SG 90 servos on cyclic, SG 50 on tail, 401b gyro.
All of them are dirt cheap. :D

For the difference in price it's daft not to get the MG servos, New pilots tend to spend a lot of time repairing helis and replacing plastic geared servos anyway.

Hi Evo, glad you decided to go with the mg's they have got to be my favourite upgrade after stripping the frame 99 times to replace sg90's  fit and forget :) As for the Tx, I know it's probably more than you would want to spend but if you are buying a 450 heli then it sounds to me as if you are into helis for the long run and you would be better investing in a dx6i, and save the head and tail upgrade until finances allow or fit head parts in ally as and when you need ie an upgrade a bit at a time :P I am still flying the original tail inc blades and shaft on one of my HK's after 18 months but main grips and central rotor is always worth an upgrade IMO......Glyn

Hey all and welcome to the Forums Evo.

Ok my advice would be - Dont bother with the HK450 barebones, Get yourself a V2. the difference in price is definitely worth it (especially as you are going to be putting so much effort into it).

Ok for swash servo's, there is no point getting the MG90 servo's when you can get the "Hobbyking Digital Servo" for the same price! For the Motor go with the "Turnigy Typhoon" motor. And finally for the Gyro, the G401B is a gyro allot of people will swear by. Combine it with a DS919MG Servo and you should be good to go. All the servo's are digital and metal geared. The motor is a great motor (works very well in my 450, even for hard aerobatics and mild 3D). Im also using some of their DIRT cheap 2200mah 20C packs and a Supersimple 40A esc. Its a great set up!

All the best and good luck,
Demon

P.P.S - If you are after a Radio and you are starting out - Go for a Turnigy 9X I have been using mine (one of the very early and original V1's) and for helicopters its flawless! Great radio and i would have even paid double the price for it. Look into the Lithium battery mod if you do get one too...

Or - Just look at this:

its essentially the same as the HK450V2 and all the kit i use is shown in the video.

Take care,

Hi Evo,

If the order has not gone through yet, you should be able to cancel it. The V1 isnt "Bad" in any way - But its alllll Plastic. The V2 has some extremely usefull metal upgrades:

Rotor head block, Washout base, Swash plate, motor mount etc etc. and its a V2 head which uses a much stronger feathering shaft. (there are more but i cant remember them at the mo)

As for the Motor - it doesnt really matter which you get but i found gearing to be easier on the 2215H - Remember, since you are a beginner i would suggest you try and set up a "tame" helicopter before you set up a powerful one.

Good luck,
Demon

The only difference between the V1 and V2 as far as parts is in the head.
The V1 uses a 3mm feathering shaft, the V2 uses a 4mm shaft. So the grips, bearings, head block and dampers are different (I think).

The rest is fine so you could plonk a V2 head on a V1 as a direct upgrade without issue.

Hi Evo,
The pro head uses the standard 5mm shaft so should fit - But i ask, what is the point in buying a pro head for the basic kit? as i said, Go for the V2 kit. It is a compromise between the two...

Good luck,
